RESUMO

PURPOSE: To explore the experiences of children and young people (CYP) with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic and lock down restrictions. METHODS: Semi-structured, online interviews were conducted with 17 children and young people from the UK, Northern Ireland, aged 10-14 years with ADHD. Over half the participants had a co-existing diagnosis, such as autism spectrum disorder. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim before being subjected to thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four themes were identified; the emotional impact of the pandemic, adjustments to daily living, impact of remote learning and the effect on relationships. Many CYP citied feelings of sadness, loneliness and anxiety, others found the reduction in social demands favourable. CONCLUSIONS: As one of few studies to capture the experiences of children and young people with ADHD during the COVID-19 pandemic, this research highlights the potential negative long-term impact on emotional welfare, schooling and relationships.Implications for rehabilitationHealth care professionals should be aware of the overall impact on health and well-being for children and young people with ADHD following the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions to ensure that the effect of these are minimised and managed in the future.Educators and clinicians should be cognisant of the long term consequences of poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and should put in place pro-active strategies to support children and young people with ADHD.Children and young people with ADHD may suffer greatly from reduced access to sports and leisure facilities. Policy makers should be conscious of the potential negative consequences of placing limitations on access to such facilities.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: People with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) want disease-specific dietary advice to reduce the confusion around diet. This study used co-design principles to develop an online nutrition education program for pwMS. METHODS: Mixed-methods (multiphase sequential design). Phase 1: online survey (n = 114 pwMS) to explore preferred content and characteristics of a nutrition program and develop a draft program. Phase 2: feedback on the draft program from stakeholders (two meetings; n = 10 pwMS and multiple sclerosis (MS) health professionals) and pwMS (two workshops; n = 6) to produce a full program prototype. Phase 3: cognitive interviews (n = 8 pwMS plus 1 spouse) to explore acceptability and ease of comprehension of one module of the program, analysed using deductive content analysis. RESULTS: Preferred topics were included in the program, which were further developed with consumer feedback. Cognitive interviews produced four themes: (1) positive and targeted messaging to motivate behaviour change; (2) "not enough evidence" is not good enough; (3) expert advice builds in credibility; and (4) engaging and appropriate online design elements are crucial. CONCLUSIONS: Positive language appears to improve motivation to make healthy dietary changes and engagement with evidence-based nutrition resources. To ensure acceptability, health professionals can use co-design to engage consumers when developing resources for pwMS.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONCo-designed nutrition education programs can help people achieve high-quality diets in line with recommendations, but very few programs exist for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), and none were co-designedThe participatory research in this study was instrumental in ensuring that important information regarding program acceptability was identifiedCo-design can ensure that the language is appropriate for the target audience, and positive language appeared to improve motivation in people with MS to engage with the online nutrition education programWhere practical and feasible, health professionals should collaborate with MS consumers when developing resources, and use positive, empowering language.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous research on retirement adjustment has been dominated by quantitative studies on the development of different indicators for adjustment success. In contrast, there is a lack of qualitative studies examining the subjective experiences of retirees in their adjustment process to the new life phase. OBJECTIVE: The article deals with the subjective adjustment experiences of persons whose regular retirement was about 1 year ago. It focuses on experienced habituation requirements and subjectively relevant factors of life satisfaction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The findings are based on qualitative interview data from a more comprehensive mixed methods study conducted between 2019 and 2022 in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. In the course of the study, 25 semi-structured interviews were carried out and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Entering the new life phase was predominately experienced positively, which was mainly associated with a gain in freedom and opportunities for regeneration; however, the time after retirement also entailed habituation requirements in different areas of life. Life satisfaction increased compared to the initial survey before retirement and was associated with various beneficial and critical factors, ranging from personal characteristics to social developments. CONCLUSION: Retirement itself is not necessarily a critical experience but can be accompanied by other critical events. A satisfactory life 1 year after retirement is linked to multiple factors. Among these, resources play an essential role.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Evaluating employee performance is important for organisational success however, limited research exists across the allied health workforce. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated allied health clinician and manager experiences and perceptions of the appropriateness of the performance and development (PAD) framework. DESIGN: A mixed methods design with purposive sampling was conducted in a medium size hospital and health service in regional Queensland to investigate the appropriateness of the PAD framework. A 29 item online survey collected likert scale and open ended responses. Identified respondents also completed a semi-structured interview. Aggregated satisfaction scores identifying PAD alignment, processes, education, resources and perceptions were analysed to identify organisational PAD appropriateness. Themes from interviews provided concurrent experiential data. FINDINGS: Eighty-five respondents completed the online survey and 20 interviews were conducted. A Chi-Square Goodness of Fit test revealed a significant (p < 0.05) clinician (n = 75) response of moderate dissatisfaction (36%) for the PAD framework, while managers (n = 10) were neither dissatisfied nor satisfied (50%) or moderately satisfied (40%). Clinician aggregated agreement responses were significantly (p < 0.05) higher for PAD alignment (45%), processes (63%), education (49%) and lower for feedback (33%) and resources (28%). Manager aggregated agreement responses were high for PAD alignment (85%), processes (55%), education (57%), feedback (65%) and perceptions (50%). Interviews (n = 20) revealed three themes: uncertainty around PAD framework; expectations for experienced leadership and importance of discipline specific knowledge. DISCUSSION: This study draws on both clinician and manager input to assess the overall PAD framework with responses favouring clinician dissatisfaction to the current process. CONCLUSION: The PAD framework is valuable for staff development when there is positive rapport and discipline alignment between both clinician and manager. Successful staff appraisals require efficient and appropriate documentation that promotes individual development, clinical performance and organisational priorities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prior literature has demonstrated barriers to successful residency matching, including sex, medical school background, and international medical graduate status. Our aim is to characterize the recent trends in successfully-matched residents, with particular attention to geography and academic productivity. METHODS: Resident information, including demographics and educational background, was gathered from program websites. Bibliometric analysis focused on PubMed publications from the top neurosurgery journals. A top 20 medical school was defined using the US News Rankings for research in 2022. Regression analyses were performed to explore the associations between total and first-author publications and other relevant factors, correcting for graduate studies. RESULTS: A total of 114 institutions and 946 residents were included in the final analysis. Of the 845 with medical school information, 62 (7.3%) completed medical school internationally and 181 of 783 (23.1%) came from a top 20 medical school. Male residents had a higher proportion of residents with international undergraduate and international medical school degrees when compared to female residents [32 (7.5%) vs. 4 (2.4%), P = 0.021; 52 (8.6%) vs. 10 (4.2%), P = 0.026; respectively]. The multivariate regression analysis demonstrated a significant increase in publications for international medical school graduates (B = 8.3, P < 0.001), top tier medical school graduate (B = 1.3, P = 0.022), and male sex (B = 1.20, P = 0.019) for total number of publications. CONCLUSIONS: Geographical factors, reported sex, and graduation status have influenced how resident candidates are perceived. Understanding these trends is vital for future resident matching. Addressing gender and educational diversity is essential to foster inclusivity and research-driven environments in neurosurgery residency programs.

RESUMO

This study explores how adolescents engage with unhealthy food and beverage marketing in online settings, from a gender perspective. Employing an online ethnography approach and using go-along interviews, we explored the experiences of adolescent boys and girls aged 13-17 as they navigated their online experiences with digital food and beverage marketing. Notable themes emerged, including the identification of predatory actions by food companies, the role of protective factors such as family, and the influence of social media influencers in shaping adolescent dietary preferences. Importantly, this research unearthed gender disparities in the participants' responses. Girls, in particular, exhibited a heightened awareness of the protective role played by their families, emphasized the influence of color in marketing strategies, recognized the significance of gender in marketing, and reported exposure to alcohol advertisements-findings that boys less frequently echoed. The study underscores the importance of adolescence as a critical phase in development, during which food companies target these impressionable individuals, driven by their independence and potential for brand loyalty. Moreover, it highlights the potential avenue of gender-specific marketing, offering valuable insights into the gendered dimensions of adolescents' food marketing experiences. By examining the interplay between digital food marketing and gender, this research addresses a critical gap in the literature, shedding light on how gender influences adolescents' perceptions, responses, and behaviors in the context of food marketing strategies. These findings have the potential to inform adolescents of the marketing techniques that target them and guide policymakers in developing and implementing evidence-based regulations aimed at safeguarding adolescents from exposure to unhealthy food marketing.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore how Accountable Communities of/for Health (ACHs), a type of health-focused multisector collaborative, are developing strategies to address health equity with diverse partners. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SETTING: Interview and focus group participants were recruited from a purposive sample of 22 ACH participant organizations in Washington (n = 9 ACHs) and California (n = 13 ACH). STUDY DESIGN: Interview and focus group data were thematized using constant comparison analysis. DATA COLLECTION: Interviews were conducted to learn how each ACH's system context, collaboration processes, and goals influence its progress toward health equity. Focus groups were conducted to gain a deeper understanding of how local context and power dynamics influence an ACH's ability to make progress toward health equity. There were 22 focus group participants and 65 interview participants. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Results indicate that ACHs advance health equity across the social-ecological spectrum of health with approaches targeting the individual, community, and societal levels. Specific approaches used by ACHs to collaboratively address health equity include providing equity education to participating organizations and community groups; including diverse community voices in collaborative decision-making; changing practices in their participant's daily operations; improving existing services and developing new services; and actively promoting a culture of keeping equity at the center of ACH efforts. CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies strategies for advancing health equity in multisector collaboratives. ACHs in Washington and California are devoting resources to ensure health equity is central to their work. The numerous approaches ACHs use to advance health equity are important to ensure everyone can reach their full health potential. While current literature argues that multisector health initiatives are integral for advancing health equity, there is a lack of research on how these initiatives advance equity in practice. Thus, this paper provides generalizable strategies that can be further investigated to optimize progress toward health equity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Being a significant other (SO) to a person with borderline personality disorder (BPD) affect their health. High incidence of substance use disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, stress, fear, anxiety, depression, family burden and grief are common. Some specific therapies for BPD, have included support to SOs, however resources are scarce and to participate in the support it assumes that the person with BPD is included in these therapies. Although the SO support has been shown to be helpful, they all have a similar structure, and only a small exclusive group of SOs have access to the support. AIM: The aim was to describe experiences and need of support for significant others to persons with borderline personality disorder from the perspective of themselves and of health care workers. METHODS: Data was collected via two focus groups. One with five SOs to persons with BPD, one with five health care workers. Two interview sessions in each group were conducted and data were analysed with qualitative content analysis. The study was approved by the research ethics committee of Lund (2016-1026). RESULTS: The results revealed four themes; not being seen by health care professionals creates hopelessness, being seen by healthcare professionals creates trust, experience of support - helpful or shameful and the step from loosely structured support to a structured support group. Both groups expressed a need for further support as a complement to already existing support. CONCLUSIONS: The need of support is extensive. The results suggest a professional coordinator intended for SOs and peer support groups not linked to a particular psychiatric treatment yet offering support in a structured way. Further studies examining these complements to existing support, is therefore recommended.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With the residency selection process becoming more competitive and programs receiving unprecedented numbers of applications, some specialties have introduced preference signaling in an attempt to help applicants target programs of interest. In the 2022-2023 application cycle, obstetrics and gynecology also introduced a 2-tiered system with a limited number of gold signals (n=3) and silver signals (n=15). OBJECTIVE: Given the novelty of preference signaling in the obstetrics and gynecology residency application process, this study aimed to (1) assess the effect of signals on interview offers and match and (2) discuss applicant attitudes toward this preference signaling system. STUDY DESIGN: This was a voluntary cross-sectional survey study conducted in April 2023 that was open to all fourth-year medical students who applied to an obstetrics and gynecology residency in the United States. Self-reported demographics, signaling, interview, and match data were collected. In addition, students were asked about attitudes toward signaling on a 5-point Likert scale. RESULTS: Of the 1507 applicants who entered an obstetrics and gynecology residency via match or Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program process, 969 (64.3%) completed the survey. Moreover, an additional 22 applicants who did not match responded to the survey. More respondents used all 3 gold tokens (98.3%) and all 15 silver tokens (94.3%). The mean number of applications sent was 74.3±35.1, and the mean number of interviews received per applicant was 12.8±6.6. The interviews or token yields were 64.0%±31.5% for gold tokens, 43.8%±23.1% for silver tokens, and 9.8%±10.0% for no token. Of the survey respondents, 340/951 (35.8%) matched to a gold token program, 338/951 (35.5%) matched to a silver token program, and 244/951 (25.7%) matched to a nontoken program. Furthermore, 499/951 applicants (52.5%) reported feeling slightly positive or very positive about signaling. CONCLUSION: Most obstetrics and gynecology applicants in this survey participated in preference signaling. Gold and silver tokens were associated with high ratios of interview invitations compared with no token. However, the overall number of applications did not decrease in the 2022-2023 cycle, and only half of survey respondents reported feeling positive about the signaling process. These results can inform program directors and students about application number and strategy in upcoming cycles.

RESUMO

Interprofessional collaboration of general practitioners and nurses in primary care: A qualitative study Abstract. Background: There is a need to strengthen interprofessional collaboration of general practitioners and home care nurses in the primary care of people with chronic diseases and long-term care needs. Aim: This study investigated a) how general practitioners and nurses in Germany perceive their collaboration in primary care and b) which development perspectives of collaboration exist from their point of view. Methods: Expert interviews were conducted with seven general practitioners and eight home care nurses. The data were analysed using thematic-structured qualitative content analysis. Results: The interviewees from both professional groups report that their collaboration is hindered by poor mutual accessibility. At the same time, they emphasise their appreciation of the professional exchange with the other professional group. Nevertheless, the perceptions of the professional competence of home care nurses differ. To improve their cooperation, the interviewees recommend the establishment of interprofessional meetings and cooperation in spatial proximity for regular professional exchange. They expect this to lead to a joint development of trust and competence and to an expansion of the area of responsibility of home care nurses in primary care. Conclusions: Binding communication structures, cooperation in spatial proximity and an expansion of the area of responsibility of home care nurses offer high potential for strengthening primary care in Germany.

RESUMO

Narcolepsy is associated with reduced quality of life and physical performance. The study aimed to explore the attitudes of people with Type 1 narcolepsy towards exercise and physical activity, their physical wellbeing, and the potential role of physiotherapy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 people with narcolepsy attending a dedicated outpatient narcolepsy clinic located in Dublin, Ireland. Transcripts were iteratively coded; a thematic analysis was undertaken, and key themes were identified. Four themes were identified: 'Barriers and Facilitators to Exercising', 'Social Concerns', 'Health Concerns' and 'Suggestions for the Role of Physiotherapy'. Future research should explore the potential role of exercise to help manage narcolepsy-related symptoms in this population.

RESUMO

Microplastics are receiving growing attention in the public debate, while the scientific assessment of risks of microplastics to ecological and human health is still ongoing. Previous studies suggest concerns among the general public with country-specific differences. However, little is known about the reasoning underlying these concerns. By conducting qualitative interviews with German (n = 15) and Italian citizens (n = 15), this study adopted a cross-national perspective to investigate which concepts shape citizens' perceptions of microplastics. A qualitative content analysis was used, with coding categories and subcategories developed inductively. Results showed that interviewees formed assumptions around microplastics despite own uncertainties, transferred knowledge from macro- to microplastics, and used the concepts of accumulation and dose-response relationship to make sense of the topic. Moreover, they saw the domains of human health and the environment as intertwined and expressed helplessness when discussing solutions to the microplastics issue. Many themes on the topic were similar in both samples, but there were also some differences. For instance, whereas Italian participants talked about marine-related microplastics, German participants talked about airborne sources; also, German participants tended to recognize more strongly the actions their country was putting in place to address the problem. These findings underscore the need for proactive risk communication despite remaining gaps in scientific risk assessment. Beyond providing technical information, communicators should consider the reasoning behind risk perception on microplastics and address scientific uncertainty as well as the interconnectedness between the domains of human health and the environment.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore midwives' and public-health nurses' experiences of breastfeeding counselling in order to provide a deeper insight into breastfeeding counselling. METHODOLOGICAL DESIGN AND JUSTIFICATION: A qualitative design was used, and qualitative content analysis was conducted to analyse the data in accordance with the phenomenological hermeneutic tradition. ETHICAL ISSUES AND APPROVAL: The Norwegian Centre for Research Data approved this study. All participants provided written consent. RESEARCH METHODS: Four focus-group interviews were conducted on a sample of eight midwives and 13 public-health nurses in Norway. RESULTS: Three interrelated themes describing the meaning of midwives' and public-health nurses' experiences with breastfeeding counselling emerged from the analysis: Breastfeeding Counselling Means Responsibility for Collaboration and Facilitation, Being Confident as a Breastfeeding Counsellor Means Striving for Professional Competence and Supporting the Individual Breastfeeding Family Means Being Sensitive and Adapting to Novel Situations. STUDY LIMITATIONS: The focus groups comprised a mix of midwives and public-health nurses, which may have inhibited honest declaration of these professionals' opinions of each other. CONCLUSION: Midwives and public-health nurses regard structural factors and prioritising breastfeeding support in society as important for providing good breastfeeding counselling. Midwives and public-health nurses strive to find a balance between relying on their own competence, promoting breastfeeding in accordance with guidelines and respecting mothers' choices. Healthcare professionals require knowledge about breastfeeding, good clinical judgement, a listening attitude and openness to how breastfeeding affects mother's everyday life to provide good breastfeeding care.

RESUMO

AIM: To explore if and how nurses' perceived organizational support affects their ability to handle and resolve ethical value conflicts. DESIGN: A mixed methods design with a longitudinal questionnaire survey and focus group interviews. METHODS: A questionnaire survey in six hospitals in two Swedish regions provided data from 711 nurses responding twice (November-January 2019/2020 and November-January 2020/2021). A cross-lagged path model tested the mutual prospective influence between the organizational climate of perceived organizational support, frequency of ethical value conflicts, and resulting moral distress. Four focus group interviews were conducted with 21 strategically selected nurses (April-October 2021). Qualitative data collection and analysis were inspired by Grounded Theory. RESULTS: A climate of perceived organizational support was empowering, contributing to role security. It prospectively decreased the frequency of ethical value conflicts but not the moral distress when conflicts did occur. CONCLUSION: It is important to facilitate the development of perceived organizational support among nurses, but also to reduce the occurrence of ethical value conflicts that the nurses cannot resolve. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION: By ensuring a shared care ideology, good inter-professional relations within the entire care organization, providing clear and supportive organizational structures, and utilizing competence adequately, healthcare managers can facilitate and support the development of perceived organizational support among nurses. Nurses who are empowered by perceived organizational support are stimulated by and take pride in their work and experience the work as meaningful and joyful. IMPACT: The study addressed the question of whether healthcare organizations could support nurses to resolving ethical value conflicts, and thus reduce moral distress. Perceived organizational support is related to factors such as ideological caring alignment and supportive organizational preconditions. This study contributes specific knowledge about how healthcare organizations can empower nurses to effectively resolve ethical value conflicts and thereby reduce their moral distress. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic forced neurosurgery residency application processes to adopt a virtual interview model. This study analyzes the trends in program and applicant residency match behavior due to virtual interviews. METHODS: National Resident Matching Program data from Main Residency Match, National Resident Matching Program Director and Applicant Survey, Electronic Residency Application Service, and Charting Outcomes in the Match were collected for neurosurgery residents for all available years, providing information on neurosurgery residency application, interview, and match outcomes. Studied years were dichotomized to account for virtual versus in-person interviews and analyzed for differences. RESULTS: Although the average number of applications received during in-person versus virtual years was not statistically different, 245 versus 290 (P = 0.115), programs interviewed more applicants when interviews were virtual, 37.2 versus 46, (P = 0.008). Similarly, matched U.S. senior applicants did not submit a statistically higher number of applications in person versus virtual, 54 versus 77 (P = 0.055), but they did attend more interviews virtually, 20.5 versus 16.6 (P = 0.013), and ranked more programs, 20 versus 16.2 (P = 0.002). Although White applicants did not have a statistically significant difference in number of applications submitted (55 vs. 68, P = 0.129), Black applicants submitted more applications during virtual match compared with in-person match (52 vs. 74, P = 0.012). The number of applicants that programs needed to rank to fill each position was not statistically different when comparing in-person versus virtually conducted interviews, 4.6 versus 5.4 (P = 0.070). CONCLUSIONS: Despite no change in the overall number of applications submitted per applicant, Black applicants submitted more applications virtually, suggesting potential benefits of virtual format for Black applicants. Interview format was strongly correlated to the use of perceived fitness by applicants in rank decision making. Virtual interviews provide major financial advantages to candidates and could help improve Black representation in neurosurgery. However, they impose limitations on ability access fitness.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Non-cognitive traits should be considered when selecting candidates to study medicine. However, evaluating these traits remains difficult. We explored whether measuring undesirable non-cognitive behaviour ('Red Flags') added value to a medical school admissions system. Red Flags included rudeness, ignoring the contributions of others, disrespectful behaviour, or poor communication. METHODS: Following an admissions interview testing non-cognitive attributes in 648 applicants to a UK medical school, we measured the association between interview score and Red Flag frequency. We tested linear and polynomial regression models to evaluate whether the association was linear or non-linear. RESULTS: In total, 1126 Red Flags were observed. While Red Flags were concentrated among low-scorers, candidates in the highest- and second-highest deciles for interview score still received Red Flags (six and twenty-two, respectively). The polynomial regression model indicated candidates with higher scores received fewer Red Flags, but the association was not linear (F(3644) = 159.8, p = .001, adjusted R2 = 0.42). CONCLUSIONS: The non-linear association between interview score and Red Flag frequency shows some candidates with desirable non-cognitive attributes will still display undesirable-or even exclusionary-non-cognitive attributes. Recording Red Flag behaviour reduces the likelihood such candidates will be offered a place at medical school.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The 2021 U.S. neurosurgery residency match interviews were conducted virtually; we surveyed applicants and interviewers to determine satisfaction with that virtual interview process. Subsequently, we conducted a follow-up survey to determine satisfaction with the virtual interview process after the residency match for faculty interviewers and 2022 interns. METHODS: A 22-question online faculty survey was sent to 116 U.S. neurosurgery training programs. A 26-question survey was sent to these programs for distribution to their intern classes. Data were analyzed quantitatively, including mean Likert score. Open-ended questionnaire responses were reviewed to identify themes. RESULTS: Overall, 32 interns representing 20 programs and 73 faculty representing 62 programs responded. Most respondents agreed that virtual interviews were more convenient (86% faculty, 90% interns) and cost-effective (100% interns) than in-person interviews. Faculty respondents agreed or strongly agreed that virtual interviews were effective to evaluate applicants' competence as residents (44%); fewer faculty agreed or strongly agreed that virtual interviews were an effective way to evaluate candidates' fit in the program (27%). For interns, 44% agreed or strongly agreed that virtual interviews gave them a good sense of the program faculty; 75% agreed or strongly agreed they were satisfied with the process related to where they matched. CONCLUSIONS: Virtual interviews offer an advantage in terms of time and cost but potentially at the expense of adequate faculty assessment of candidates' "fit" within a program's culture. Despite this, interns undergoing an all-virtual interview process report high satisfaction with the results of the residency match.

RESUMO

Experiences of interpersonal violence are common among youth. Starting prevention programming early (e.g., middle school) may be beneficial for primary prevention. Evaluating whether such programs are effective often requires collecting self-report data from youth, but many existing measures have been developed for high school and college-aged youth. This study aimed to assess adolescents' comprehension of self-report survey items on interpersonal violence with middle school youth. We conducted virtual cognitive interviews with 15 youth in grades 6 to 8. A content analysis was used to identify patterns and to classify the nature and type of comprehension issues youth experienced. Nearly all students found most questions clear and understandable. We identified the following comprehension issues: (1) uncertainty with how the intent of a perpetrator factored into a victim's experience (e.g., distinguishing the difference between joking and bullying, or intentional versus unintentional behavior); (2) lack of familiarity with certain expressions of sexualized violence (e.g., "sexual looks") or sex-related terminology (e.g., intercourse); and (3) narrow interpretations of question prompts (e.g., interpreting "forced" as physically forced, not psychologically coerced). Students suggested including language describing dating relationships, types of social media platforms where cyber abuse takes place, and additional examples alongside items to enhance relevance and clarity. Survey questions to measure interpersonal violence may need to be adapted for use among middle school youth. Our findings highlight potential considerations for improving the measurement of interpersonal violence in this age group.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate how NGNs perceived and applied an intervention for preventing stress-related ill health embedded in a transition-to-practice programme when entering their professional life. DESIGN: A qualitative exploratory descriptive design was selected for this study to gain insights and perspectives on the adoption and utilization of the intervention. METHODS: In this qualitative methodology process evaluation, semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews were conducted with a sample of 49 nurses. Data were collected between December 2016 and July 2017, and were sorted in NVivo 12 Plus, followed by thematic analysis. RESULTS: The analysis resulted in three change processes stimulated by the intervention: (a) Building acceptance of being new; (b) Gaining insight into professional development and health and (c) Practical steps for skills development, healthy habits and better-organized work. In addition to the three themes, barriers that hindered the progression of the processes were also described. Each process influenced the development of the others by stimulating a deeper understanding, motivation to change and courage to act. Several barriers were identified, including the use of cognitively demanding intervention tools, fatigue, high work demands, inconvenient work hours and a hostile social climate on the ward. CONCLUSION: This process evaluation showed that newly graduated nurses used knowledge from the intervention and adopted new behaviours largely in accordance with how the intervention was intended to work. IMPACT: When entering a new profession, it is crucial to receive a well-thought-out, structured and targeted introduction to the new professional role, tasks and work group. Nurses stated that the intervention increased their understanding of the role as new nurses and their insight into how to develop skills that promoted better functioning and recovery. The intervention also stimulated the development of new health behaviour and some new learning strategies.

RESUMO

COVID-19 was concerning for older adults because they faced greater health risks from the virus and generally experience higher rates of isolation and loneliness. Single older adults are of particular concern because they also lack a cohabiting partner for social connection, so they may face greater levels of loneliness. Many older adults have been using technology to develop and maintain social connections, including romantic connections, to mitigate these feelings of loneliness and isolation. This research explores how feelings of loneliness connect to use of online dating sites during a pandemic, how older adults decided to and rationalized dating at a time when meeting in-person and social interactions were discouraged and dangerous, and how experiences differed between men and women. I interviewed 50 men and 50 women, ages 60-83, about their experiences seeking partners and dating during the pandemic. All respondents were single, heterosexual, and recruited from online dating websites, but varied by race, education level, marital experience, employment status, and geographic location. Single older adults relied on feelings of loneliness and isolation, the ubiquity of online dating sites, and particularly for women, adherence to safety measures while on a date as motivation for seeking and meeting romantic partners during a pandemic. Single older adults seeking new romantic interactions during a pandemic, when health risks were greater, illustrates the importance of intimate relationships even into older age and how loneliness and isolation are powerful drivers in seeking romantic relationships.
